How old is my sewing machine and how do I diagnose problems on?
I have a Montgomery Ward Model Number UHT J1939 like to know how old is this machine. I also had problems with tension with this machine. It leaves large loops in the fabric and the machine to jam. I followed all the suggestions in the manual and they did not help. Is there anything else I might be missing?
Can not tell you how old he is – could probably make a proposal from an image, but that's all. As your tension headaches … the problem seems to be with the upper thread tension. The most common mistake newbie I see that it is causes thread with the presser foot down – the thread never enters the higher voltage. But let's review a few other possibilities: 1) discs crudded higher voltage (lint buildup someone performs the hand quilting thread, rust, etc.) Take a piece of washed cotton, weight muslin (hem pillowcase work well. Moisten a fold of tissue with rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka. Open the tension discs, increasing the presser foot, insert the fold of tissue wet and "thread" with the soaked cloth and repeat with dry cloth. Sometimes this must be done in a couple or three times before they get all cruddlies OUT. Rust, unfortunately, means drives new tensions. 2) stuck or broken tension spring higher. Replace. Maybe a DIY job or perhaps need a completely new assembly tension. Stuck springs can sometimes take off with a little WD-40 and some gentle prying with toothpicks, but more often it is a replacement "required" problem. To decide if this is the problem with ordinary wire wire sewing, and the presser foot up – over the wire so that you are sure it is between the tension discs. Place the presser foot down. Set the voltage selector and a silk thread a bit, noting how much force you need. Set the voltage selector 9, and see if you need more strength (you should!). 3) Stuck or broken connection between the mechanism of real tension and the line distance or fixing mechanism on some machines. Probably not a question about it. Same symptoms as 2; mainly Repair Pro. 4) Misthreading. Thread with the presser foot down, missing some of points along the way threading can cause similar "no tension" symptoms. Read the manual and go step by step, the presser foot up Are you ready to thread the needle. 5) Thread too thick for the size of the needle. The wire is sitting in the long groove on the front needle. If the wire is too thick, it's going in there and jam not pulled back the lever correctly received. Cure use the right size wire for needles … compare the size of the throat in different sizes sewing needle here: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/17206792 6) mismatch between the bobbin thread and top thread. You can get away with a big difference on most machines, but some machines are incredibly fussy about it and the tone is appropriate if you do not have the same top and bottom of the thread accurate. 7) One of those wonky on the needle of things about yourself. Used syringes with a bit of a strawberry or a slight curvature to the tree can cause all sorts of strange symptoms. If it was awhile, a nice pop, new size 80/12 needle in the machine, rethread and try again. Size 80 is what sewing machines are generally measured off with a wire weight seamstress. Make sure you get the needle into the right side, or you'll feel the machine is now jump stitches. To summarize: 1) Clean and oil your machine according to the manual, top and bottom. Remove the bobbin case and needleplate and get in there with the vacuum cleaner and brush. Do not use canned or compressed air – you blow away lint in the machine. 2) upper tension discs Clean 3) Rethread, following the instructions step by step manual and keeping up the presser foot. Floss the thread into the tension. High weight sewing thread and bottom. 4) Set the voltage greater than 4 (normal voltage for most tissues, most of the stitches) 5) Try a sample test. If the loops, but not as bad, set the voltage to a higher number and try again. Generally, if you can not get a balanced point of law on a clean machine to the line between 2 and 6, it is time for a trip to the store. If it is always buckle after, try the test I described an voltage stuck or broken. Usually at this point, if nothing has changed, the machine is due to a trip to the repair shop – I guess it's probably a mechanical machine, and here a certificate of authenticity (cleaning / oil / adjust) Would you run $ 50-60; if the voltage had to be replaced, it can run another $ 20-50 depending on the machine, and a new tension is even available. Most stores will check here spring while you wait and give you at least a rough estimate so you can decide if the repair costs amounted to or, if you prefer to buy a new machine or hand. If you want to learn to do basic repairs on your machine, you can consider joining Yahoo group "wefixit. Good people there. Knowledge shared freely.
